Smart Ways for Men To Take Care of Their Health As They Age

Daisy · February 19, 2021 · Leave a Comment

There’s a widespread belief that men don’t like going to the doctor and would do anything to avoid a checkup. While it may seem stereotypical to say men are too casual about their health and less likely than women to get medical care, the results of several health studies support these notions.

A Cleveland Clinic survey revealed that of 1,174 adult men surveyed, approximately half of them reported getting regular checkups. Medical professionals suggest that one contributor to gender differences in seeking care may be that women initially get involved with the healthcare system and begin visiting gynecologists at an earlier age and develop the habit of scheduling annual visits. However, men may not go to a physician unless something’s going on and won’t begin routine screening until they’re in their 30s or 40s. Seventy-four percent of older men who participated in the survey reported seeing their physician for annual physicals, whereas 43 percent of men aged 35 to 54 had yearly physicals. Making routine visits to a primary care physician is just one way to improve one’s health. Listed below are smart, practical methods for men to take care of their health as they age.

1. Visit a physician for regular screenings and checkups.

Consulting a doctor is almost always listed as one of the top 5 important tips for men’s health. Going without a doctor’s care and screening for significant health problems puts men at greater risk of illness and death. Furthermore, regularly seeing a doctor allows them to detect high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high BMI, high blood sugar, and other health issues early and provide preventive care. By regularly visiting your doctor, you can also start getting screened for heart disease, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and other age-related illnesses at the right time based on your family history.

2. Be as physically active as possible, and eat well.

Staying physically active can keep men in excellent physical, emotional, and mental shape. Men should consider following an exercise routine of activities they enjoy, such as walking, jogging, swimming, lifting weights, and more as they age. Eating right is just as crucial as maintaining physical activity. Adhering to a diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein sources while avoiding and limiting saturated fats and highly salted foods can benefit health.

Men can enhance and preserve their health, how they feel, and their energy levels by remaining physically active, eating well, and getting sufficient rest and sleep.

3. Cease all unhealthy habits.

Quitting any bad habits will make practicing the good ones mentioned above more effective. Unhealthy habits like consuming alcohol excessively and smoking cigarettes—behaviors men are more likely than women to engage in—can be consequential to health. Smoking can increase the risk of heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and types of cancer.

Quitting smoking can be a lot of work, just as getting the smell of smoke out of one’s clothes and garments is, considering cigarette smell can seep into everything. Smoke smell may linger in clothes from one day to the next day, even after a cycle in the washing machine and dryer sheet use. Many people may be curious about how to get smoke smell out of clothes and fabrics, especially former or quitting smokers who get reminded of their habit by smoky clothes. The perfect remedy for removing odors comes in a spray bottle. Using a non-toxic, eco-friendly odor eliminating spray created with chemists’ expertise so that it breaks down odors at a molecular level makes smells undetectable. Such a solution can help people quitting cigarettes enjoy a fresh fragrance and feel good about themselves as they achieve a more healthy lifestyle.

Routine physicals, a healthy diet, exercise routines, proper rest, doing away with bad habits, and other ways of caring for physical, emotional, and mental health can enhance men’s health and overall quality of life.
